Wolfe Pack 6, Squirrels 2

Without most of their regulars, the Squirrels took a beating from a short-handed Wolfe Pack on Thursday, falling 6-2.

The game got off to a brutal start when Wolfe Pack took a penalty on the first shift of the game, then scored shorthanded moments after. Matt Wolf scored to tie the game, but Wolfe Pack scored again to make it 2-1 going into the second period.

That’s when the game took a turn, as Wolfe Pack scored three times in the second, then again early in the third period.

Matt Wolf scored again in the third period. Despite the score, the Squirrels did have possession for a lot of the game, but had a hard time getting the puck past goalie Justin Weston.

Squirrels 2, Wolfe Pack 1 (SO)

The Squirrels dealt Wolfe Pack its first loss of the season Sunday after a seven-round shootout.

After a scoreless first period, Wolfe Pack scored on a jailbreak to take a 1-0 lead, which they held throughout much of the rest of the game. In the third, Wolfe Pack almost made it 2-0 on a breakaway but Ben Sumner’s interference penalty helped keep the puck out of the net, and the Squirrels killed the power play.

The Squirrels finally got a puck past Wolfe Pack goalie Justin Weston as Bob Valdes, deep down on the left side and shooting left-handed, roofed a shot to tie the game with about five minutes remaining.

In the shootout, Dave Chung and Tim Stump each scored, but so did two Wolfe Pack players in the first three rounds. Craig Beatty made some amazing saves down the stretch before Nate Groves scored in the seventh round.

The Squirrels were credited with 34 shots on net, to Wolfe Pack’s 21.
