The Squirrels lost their first game of the season Monday, 5-4 to the Whalers, but not without a fight and while holding a significant shot advantage.
Ben Sumner scored shorthanded off of a rebound by Jason Wolf to get the scoring started in the first period. The Whalers scored a couple of goals in the second, before Mike Bartock tied the game at 2-2.
In two minutes late in the second period, even with Squirrels pressure, the Whalers scored three times, mostly on fast breaks, to take a 5-2 lead.
They held that lead throughout most of the third period, before Bartock scored his second of the game. The Squirrels pulled their goalie and pulled within a goal as Jason Gustafson scored, but with 13 second remaining, the Squirrels couldn’t tie the game.
The Squirrels were credited with 48 shots on goal to the Whalers’ 32.
