Squirrels 8, Wolfe Pack 1

Squirrel Dave Steckel came really close to a Gordie Howe hattrick on Tuesday, not to mention a real hattrick with three goals and two assists, but wasn’t called for a penalty at the end of the game when the Wolfe Pack’s Salvatore Crupi cross-checked him behind the play, then punched him several times before Steckel wrestled him to the ground in self defense.

Squirrels 7, Brewins 1

Not too many people showed up on a Saturday night during July 4th weekend, but the Squirrels had enough for an advantage over the one sub that the Brewins had. That helped them get a 7-1 win, with the one goal against coming due to a deflection off of referee Keith Raygor’s knee.

Chi Pham played his first ice game of the summer for the Squirrels, collecting two goals and an assist while playing left wing, instead of his natural position at defense.

With six games remaining in the season, the Squirrels hold a two-point lead in the division.

Roller: Squirrels Hold Off Jesters

In the biggest test of the season so far, the Screaming Squirrels held onto first place in the division with a 6-5 victory against the Jesters.

The Jesters scored only 39 seconds into the game, but Jeff Ford tied it up a couple minutes later before the Squirrels started taking penalties. Despite taking four minors in the first half, Eric Smith and Mark Tessar each logged shorthanded goals to put the Squirrels up 3-1 at the half.

The Jesters struck twice to open the second period, but with about six minutes remaining, a single shift netted two goals in 20 seconds at Steve Heger roofed a shot and Jeff Ford’s centering pass to Rob Myers put the Squirrels up by two again.

The Jesters cut the lead to 5-4 before Myers scored on an empty net with 34 seconds remaining. The Jesters managed one more goal and had a chance for another but the Squirrels held on for the victory and a three-point lead in the standings. The Squirrels killed off all six minor penalties.
