Squirrels Win Inline Championship

The Screaming Squirrels won their third roller championship, and first in six years, with a come-from-behind victory against the top-seeded Jesters, 3-2, on Thursday.

Down 2-0 at the half, the Squirrels caught a break in the second when the Jesters – one of the least penalized teams in the league – went down two men on hooking and charging calls. That’s when yet another Don Marks slap shot (he’s had several lately) struck the net to cut the Jesters’ lead to 2-1.

After killing Ben Sumner’s hooking penalty, the Squirrels tied the game as Eric Smith connected with Brian Iciek to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, Iciek struck again – giving him a team-leading six goals in the playoffs – which gave the Squirrels a 3-2 lead down the stretch.

The game was hardly over. The Jesters drew a four-minute high-sticking penalty with about three minutes remaining in the game, meaning they’d have an opportunity to tie and then win the game on the power play. But stellar penalty killing, plus two drawn penalties by Juan Canchasto and Mark Tessar in the waning seconds, actually gave the Squirrels a 3-on-2 power play as time ticked down.

Stew Miller made 18 saves to keep the Squirrels in the game.

It was also a sweet moment for new Squirrels Steven Heger and Ed Owen, who was out on injured reserve. Their previous team, the Hurricanes, ended up sharing the 2003 championship with the Squirrels when the best-of-three series was cut short due to Hurricane Isabel. Two seasons later, the two teams were destined for a rematch but an awful upset against the top-seeded Hurricanes in the semifinals paved the way for a Squirrels victory in the finals against the Chupacabres. After that, the Hurricanes moved up a level, then disbanded this year as the Squirrels picked up their former foes.

Sumner, Marks, Rob Myers and Chi Pham were the only players to win all three championships with the roller Squirrels. It was the second for Canchasto and Jeff Ford.

The Squirrels are already looking forward to next season and looking to be just as good.

Playoffs: Squirrels 5, Team Mylec 3

The Screaming Squirrels advanced to their first roller finals game in six years Wednesday with a 5-3 win against 5th-seeded Team Mylec, thanks to four second period goals and great goaltending by Stew Miller.

The Squirrels got on the board first as Ben Sumner stole a puck from behind the net and centered to Brian Iciek. But Team Mylec tied it up with 14 seconds remaining in the period to take a 1-1 tie into the half. The Squirrels also killed a 4-on-2 penalty kill during the period.

Team Mylec struck first in the second period to take a 2-1 lead, but 15 seconds later Eric Smith struck to tie the game again. Then a Don Marks slap shot found the net to give the Squirrels a lead. The Squirrels managed to kill off a 5-minute major as Mark Tessar scored short-handed, but the Squirrels gave up one on the kill. Iciek scored on the power play with about five minutes remaining for the insurance goal, then held on for the win.

The Squirrels advance to face the top-seeded Jesters, who beat District 5, 6-3 earlier in the evening.

The championship game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Ice: Squirrels Get Big Win

Boosted by three goals by Don Marks, the Screaming Squirrels took a 4-1 lead into the third period and held on despite several penalties for a 5-4 win against one of the top teams in the division.

The Highlanders put 40 shots on backup goaltender Eric Coulson, but his 36 saves, and assist, were enough for the win.

The Squirrels scored four power play goals, gave up a short-handed goal, and gave up two power play goals in the third during a 5-minute major penalty.

Marks’ first and third goals came off slap-shots, with his second coming on an individual effort. All three were on the PP. Mark Tessar also scored on the first shift of the game when the goaltender made the initial save but the puck then bounced right over him. Jon Danziger also scored for the Squirrels.

With the win, the Squirrels jumped ahead into second in the standings.

Roller: Squirrels Dominate, Advance to Semi-Finals

It took a few minutes and a one-goal deficit before they settled in, but after that it was all Squirrels on Wednesday as they defeated the High Rollerz, 10-1, with the majority of the second period on a running clock. Each player had at least a point, and the Squirrels kept their cool when tensions got high. The Squirrels also killed another long two-man deficit in the second period.

The Squirrels advance to face District 5 Team Mylec, who upset the Whale, 3-2.
