Squirrels 2, Piranhas 2

Playing their last game of the regular season against the first-place Piranhas, the Screaming Squirrels took a 2-1 lead into the last few minutes but ultimately settled for a 2-2 tie, which kept them from at least temporarily taking over first place in the division.

The Squirrels gave up a short-handed goal to the one guy who doesn’t know which jersey color to bring – John Kucharski – in the first period against sub goaltender Sergey Kocharov before finally finding the net in the third. After changing the forward line combinations after the second, Jon Danziger whistled a shot into the top-right corner to tie the game at 1. Later int he period, Ben Sumner stole the puck from Kucharski behind the net, found Mark Tessar out front who banged it in.

Later in the period, some rough stuff went down but it was ultimately Tessar who got the lone penalty. The Piranhas capitalized and the teams finished out the game tied at 2 apiece.

The Squirrels are now awaiting the results of the Scurvy and Bullets, who each have a game to play, to see where they’ll be seeded for the playoffs.

Playoffs: Piranhas 4, Squirrels 2

Jason Nehmer, left, celebrates his first goal with Mark Tessar.

The Piranhas sort of got their revenge after several losses against the Squirrels by bouncing them from the playoffs Thursday, 4-2. The Squirrels had beaten them twice this season, and 8-0 in last winter’s finals.

The Squirrels dressed a full bench but the league’s leading scorer, John Kucharski (who had 14 more points than the second league leader), notched two goals, including the winner in the third. In his final game before moving to Kentucky, Jason Nehmer (No. 88, pictured) scored twice.

The Piranhas, the third seed, advance to the finals for the second winter in a row, where they will face the No. 1 seed, the Highlanders, who beat DC Fire in overtime.

The Squirrels will be back on the ice soon as they’re fielding another summer team.

Squirrels 2, Piranhas 0

It wasn’t easy or pretty, but the Screaming Squirrels tightened up defensively and notched a goal to defeat the Piranhas on Sunday.

Rob Myers’ second period rebound shot put the Squirrels on the board, and Tony Richelsen added an empty-netter as sub goaltender Earnest blocked 17 frantic shots for the shut out.

The Piranhas took seven minor penalties during regulation, giving the Squirrels two 5-on-3 advantages. But the power play and much of the game was routinely foiled by 26 saves from sub goaltender Shane Smith, who normally plays for the Bullets. But the one goal and gritty defensive play was enough to secure the victory for the Squirrels.

Squirrels 3, Piranhas 2

Despite outshooting the Piranhas, 32-17, the Squirrels only managed a 3-2 victory Sunday in a game in which the Piranhas didn’t even have enough players for a full line change.

But a win is a win and the Squirrels will take it.

Brent Machado, Bob Valdes, and Rob Myers scored for the Squirrels, who surrendered a late goal before aggressively killing the clock in the final moments.
