Roller: Squirrels Settle for Tie

Against a very tough team, the Squirrels took an early 2-0 lead Tuesday, then slapped themselves on the forehead as they gave up two shorthanded goals – and that was all – and settled for a 2-2 tie. Goaltender Stew Miller made 19 saves, some from point blank range.

Mark Tessar and Jeff Ford scored for the Squirrels.

Roller: Squirrels Down District 5

Mark Tessar had four goals and the Screaming Squirrels dominated District 5 on Thursday, earning a relatively easy 7-3 victory. Desmond Richelsen returned to action after missing several games due to his appendectomy, though rumors are spreading that it was actually a vasectomy.

Squirrels 5, Whale 2

With only two subs on the bench, the Screaming Squirrels played long shifts and sucked wind for much of the game Thursday, but somehow managed a late-game scoring surge to beat the recently demoted Whale, 5-2.

Despite playing defensively much of the game, the Squirrels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals by Stu Miller and Kyle Gassert. Then the Whale struck back with two goals in less than a minute.

Very little happened in the third period. Whale, which had three subs, continued to put pressure on the Squirrels, but goaltender Bob Sewell came up big.

Then something unexpected happened late in the game. The Squirrels, utterly exhausted, scored three goals in about a minute and a half after capitalizing off of Whale turnovers, including two by Stu Miller and one by Mark Tessar.

This is the first loss for the Whale in this division. No penalties were called in the game.

High Rollers 7, Squirrels 6

Consistently Horrendous Officiating Dooms Squirrels

They fought their way through numerous non-called hooks, holds, trips and body checks and managed to kill off a handful of laughable penalties, but in the end it was too much for the Squirrels to overcome, losing 7-6 to the High Rollers.  Referee Jason Harab got things started early in the first period when he called Squirrels back-up goalie Bob Sewell for throwing his stick even though in reality it was knocked from his hands by an opposing player and Harab admitted to Sewell that he didn’t even see what happened, he just saw the stick laying there.  The High Rollers opted for the penalty shot, which Sewell subsequently stopped.

The low point of the night came when the Squirrels forward Rob Myers carried the puck down the left wing boards.  High Rollers defender Jason Banks lost his hockey stick so he decided to skate at and into Myers and knock him over instead.  He certainly accomplished this, leaning in with his knee and hip and flipping Myers into the air.  Referee Harab standing right there with no clue what interference, roughing, charging, or kneeing are in a non-checking league, let play continue.  Referee Tom Latona, trailing the play was under the mistaken belief that Banks was somehow trying to retrieve his hockey stick which was nowhere near Myers.  Myers initially went after Banks following the non-call hipflip check, and Stu Miller subsequently informed Harab that he was a major league retard.  Consequently, the Squirrels instead of getting the powerplay they deserved out of the hit on Myers got a 2 man penalty kill.  Other comical but pathetic officiating moments included Jeff Ford skating about 6 feet dragging along a High Rollers player who firmly had his hockey stick hooked onto or under Ford’s shoulders and underarm area; the call? – none of course.

Despite the consistently horrific officiating, the Squirrels managed to maintain or regain their composure, fighting their way back to a tie or to within a goal at several points in the game.  Down by a goal with a minute left, the Squirrels attempted to pull the goalie, however, they couldn’t maintain possession of the puck deep in the zone long enough to get Sewell to the bench.  The game ended with the High Rollers running out the clock with puck possession.

Roller: Meeks Frustrates Squirrels

The Squirrels have been playing against goaltender Ryan Meeks for years, and usually get the better of him due to the lopsided shot count. Wednesday, the Squirrels once again had a lopsided shot count, 38-24, but fell to the lowly Real C Team, 5-4, as Patrick Reilly scored four times.

Aside from a Rob Myers’ shorthanded goal, Kyle Gassert was the only one who could routinely get the puck past Meeks, and did so three times.
