Roller: Squirrels Hold On for The Win

Heading into the 2nd half of the Squirrels Tuesday night match v. The Real C Team, things were looking tense for the Squirrels as they clung to a precarious one touchdown lead.  Try as they may, the Real C Team goalie stonewalled the Squirrels on opportunity after opportunity to keep the game within a single touchdown. As a result, an elated Jeff Ford celebrated with great emotion as he notched the 11th goal of the game to put the Real C Team down by another field goal.  Meanwhile, on the other end of the rink, Stu Miller had a spectacular night in net, stopping close to 50% of the 2 shots on goal he faced.  “I was seeing the puck real well tonight and had all of my angles covered.” said Miller after the game.  Despite the close score, Vice President and General Manager Ben Sumner reported that Tuesday night’s victory was the most lopsided victory in Squirrels history.

High Rollers 7, Squirrels 6

Consistently Horrendous Officiating Dooms Squirrels

They fought their way through numerous non-called hooks, holds, trips and body checks and managed to kill off a handful of laughable penalties, but in the end it was too much for the Squirrels to overcome, losing 7-6 to the High Rollers.  Referee Jason Harab got things started early in the first period when he called Squirrels back-up goalie Bob Sewell for throwing his stick even though in reality it was knocked from his hands by an opposing player and Harab admitted to Sewell that he didn’t even see what happened, he just saw the stick laying there.  The High Rollers opted for the penalty shot, which Sewell subsequently stopped.

The low point of the night came when the Squirrels forward Rob Myers carried the puck down the left wing boards.  High Rollers defender Jason Banks lost his hockey stick so he decided to skate at and into Myers and knock him over instead.  He certainly accomplished this, leaning in with his knee and hip and flipping Myers into the air.  Referee Harab standing right there with no clue what interference, roughing, charging, or kneeing are in a non-checking league, let play continue.  Referee Tom Latona, trailing the play was under the mistaken belief that Banks was somehow trying to retrieve his hockey stick which was nowhere near Myers.  Myers initially went after Banks following the non-call hipflip check, and Stu Miller subsequently informed Harab that he was a major league retard.  Consequently, the Squirrels instead of getting the powerplay they deserved out of the hit on Myers got a 2 man penalty kill.  Other comical but pathetic officiating moments included Jeff Ford skating about 6 feet dragging along a High Rollers player who firmly had his hockey stick hooked onto or under Ford’s shoulders and underarm area; the call? – none of course.

Despite the consistently horrific officiating, the Squirrels managed to maintain or regain their composure, fighting their way back to a tie or to within a goal at several points in the game.  Down by a goal with a minute left, the Squirrels attempted to pull the goalie, however, they couldn’t maintain possession of the puck deep in the zone long enough to get Sewell to the bench.  The game ended with the High Rollers running out the clock with puck possession.

Squirrels 8, Laughing Skulls 3

Maybe it was a lingering Saturday night hangover or perhaps it was the old geezer officiating with Bruce Bagley, but heading into the 3rd period of Sunday’s early afternoon game against the Laughing Skulls, the Squirrels had drawn more penalty calls than they had scored goals.  Defenseman and former league penalty minute leader, Dan Carter, made a strong case that he deserves the title once again this year.  However, after his 4th minor penalty in the 2nd period he was excused from the game by league rule.  Carter, now tied for 2nd with the Skulls’ Francis Conlon at 72 PIM only trails the Vikings’ Eddie Ryland by 2 PIM for the league lead.  “I was kinda hoping they would throw a 10 in there somewhere”, said a dejected Carter after the game. “But you can’t make them change the call.”

With Carter out of the way, the Squirrels managed to calm down in the penalty department and clung precariously to a 5-3 lead in the 3rd period built on goals by Jason Nehmer, Matt Brolik, Dan Carter, Don Marks, and Paul Patrinicola.  Pesky hothead Eddie Zaruba had managed to strike for a pair in addition to a goal by Anthony Campanella to keep the Skulls within striking distance.  That’s when Squirrels forward Tony Richelson took matters into his own hands, first skating past everyone for an easy powerplay goal around the halfway mark of the period and scoring again a little more than 2 minutes later after Borlik netted his 2nd goal of the afternoon.  From there it was lights out for the Skulls.

Squirrels 9, Nordiques 2

Squirrels Begin A New Era, Continue Dominance

Thursday’s game against the Nordiques marked the beginning of the post-Mike Bronson era for the Screaming Squirrels.   Bronson, who spent 3 seasons with the Squirrels, amassed a whopping 59 goals and 95 points as part of the Gold and Black.  Rumors surfaced earlier in the week that as a gesture of good faith Bronson left the Squirrels a nut before heading to Chicago and presented it to Vice President and General Manager Ben Sumner.  However Sumner, who was vacationing on the West Coast, was not available for comment.

The Squirrels would need no superstar power on this night as they jumped to a multi-goal lead by the 2nd period and initiated the running clock rule about half-way through the 3rd.   Chris Wautel, recently called up from the team’s minor league affiliate, struck for 2 goals and 4 points in the first period alone.  Although not managing to put the puck in the net, defenseman Kyle Gassert was effective in using the puck at knocking down and knocking out several Nordiques who already had a short bench.  One Nordique player had to leave the game with a busted finger from a Gassert slapshot.  At the other end of the ice, Squirrels goalie Eric Coulson managed to stop most of the dozen or so shots that trickled his way, however, Nordiques star Hector Rosario managed to sneak one in through the 5 hole and Regan Sweeney put in the 3rd period’s lone goal past Coulson as well.

Squirrels 10, Piranhas 4

There were more Squirrels at Thursday night’s game versus the Piranhas than you’d find at a bird feeder overflowing with seed, and Piranhas backup goalie Greg Mumma played the best game of his career through 22 minutes of play, but none of that could stop the Squirrels from improving to an incredible 15-1-0 with a 10-4 victory at the Patrick Rink.  “I think the goalie gave up after I ran him over and scored a goal”, said Squirrels ringer Mike Bronson after the game. “But that’s what you gotta do, crash the goalie.”  Bronson had a relatively quiet night scoring only 3 goals and assisting on 2 others.  When asked about the goal, a visibly upset and dazed Mumma said, “They said ‘your mamma’ after the goal- ha ha, real funny.”  However other players on the ice reported only hearing someone say “You OK Mumma?”  Mumma denied allegations that he was only there to once again prove that the Squirrels should be playing in the B league.

Things didn’t start out well for the Squirrels, who gave up the first goal of the game, then fell behind again early in the 2nd period after relinquishing two quick goals within the first 2 minutes of the period.   Halfway through the 2nd period though the Squirrels got things rolling as Bronson got physical with Mumma sparking the beginning of a Squirrels scoring spree.  The Squirrels netted the game’s next 6 goals and outscored the Piranhas 8-1 over the remainder of the game.  Six different players scored for the Squirrels during that stretch, illustrating what a true team effort the win was.  Piranhas scoring threat John Kucharski was a non-factor the 2nd half of the game, being shut down by the Squirrels defense and goalie Eric Coulson.  “I thought we played a well disciplined game, controlling the puck and staying out of the penalty box,” said the Squirrels coach.
