Squirrels Advance to Finals

The Screaming Squirrels ice team advanced to the Bronze 2 league finals with a 6-2 victory against Fat Daddy on Tuesday.

Down 2-0 early, Tero Moberg put the Squirrels on the board late in the first period. Jon Danziger and Tom Fischer scored in the second to give the Squirrels a 3-2 lead going into the third. That’s when things got really interesting.

Early in the third, the Squirrels took two sets of double minors only 26 seconds apart, giving Fat Daddy nearly three and a half minutes with a 5-on-3 power play. The Squirrels killed it, and Fat Daddy fell apart as the Squirrels scored three more goals to close out the game.

The Squirrels will face the top-seeded Piranhas in the finals on Sunday at 6:50 p.m. on the Logsdon rink.

Down 3-1 after the first period, the Squirrels scored five unanswered goals Saturday to beat the Cruisers, a team they hadn’t beaten yet this season. The Squirrels will next play Tuesday at 9:50.

A win would’ve put them in first, but instead the Squirrels tied and settled for finishing the regular season in second place, despite having the same number of points as the Piranhas, who finished in first with one extra victory. It was also the fourth tie in a row to end the season.

The Squirrels play this coming Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.

Despite Tie, First Place Up for Grabs

The Squirrels were down 1-0 after about 30 seconds, but then raced to a 4-1 lead in what looked to be a blowout in the making. But a lackluster second period saw the game tied at 4, then the Cruisers took the lead with a shorthanded goal in the third period. The Squirrels eventually tied it, but it was ultimately another victory they let slip away, with one game remaining in the season.

The point did, however, put the Squirrels in a tie for first place with the Piranhas, who lost to DC Fire. Each first place team has one game remaining, both against the Brewins. If both teams wind up with the same number of points, the Squirrels win the tiebreaker due to their head-to-head record with the Piranhas.

With just under 2:30 to go in the game, the Squirrels had a 7-5 lead and a power play. But that’s when they gave up two shorthanded goals, and tying the first-place Piranhas, 7-7, to remain a point back in the standings.
