The Squirrels got their season started on a positive note Wednesday with a decisive 7-3 victory against the Laughing Skulls. Tero Moberg led the way with three goals, while new Squirrel Brian St. Clair added two.
The Skulls’ goalie kept the Squirrels off the board for much of the first period, but Moberg broke through, and Dave Chung’s slap shot from the middle of the ice near the blue line gave the Squirrels a 2-0 lead.
Geoff Grek’s slap shot and St. Clair’s 5-hole shot in the second period put the Squirrels up 4-0 before the Laughing Skulls scored. St. Clair then added another when he chipped the puck into the top corner of the net.
The Skulls scored again in the third period, before Moberg scored twice in eight seconds, the first on a rebound, and the second off of the ensuing face-off after Ben Sumner stole the puck from a defender and Moberg got loose. The Skulls added one more goal. Craig Beatty made 28 saves for the Squirrels, while the Squirrels put up 53 shots.
