The Squirrels squandered an opportunity to sweep the Whalers on Saturday, outshooting them but missing the chances they needed en route to a 4-3 loss. Scott Kronzek got the scoring started for the Squirrels, but the Whalers netted one with two seconds remaining in the first period and scored on a slap shot in the first 15 seconds of the second. The Whalers would score twice more to take a 4-1 lead.
Ben Sumner scored from a sharp angle on the right wing for a power play goal in the third, and Neil Shah would find the net late in the game, but the Squirrels couldn’t get the equalizer.
