With only one sub, the Squirrels put up their most lopsided victory of the season Saturday, easily defeating the Whalers, 5-0.
Tony Richelsen scored the first two for the Squirrels, as Brent Machado, Bob Valdes and Arie Stock each had one. Craig Beatty had a 14-save shutout, as the Squirrels finished the regular season in fourth place.
The Squirrels biggest break in this game, oddly enough, came on a delayed penalty when they had the puck. Beatty came out of the net to hop on the bench for an extra attacker, just as the puck got passed back by a Squirrels player. Beatty, who was headed for the bench, missed the puck, and it barely sailed wide of the Squirrels own goal.
Arie Stock led the Squirrels in scoring with 10 goals and 11 assists.
The first playoff game is Friday, Aug. 18 at 9 p.m.
