Down 2-1 and killing a minor penalty in the final two minutes, the Squirrels got the tying goal they needed, as Arie Stock skated in shorthanded and tied the game when all the Whalers had to do was run out the clock.
But the Whalers prevailed after an eight-round shootout, limiting the Squirrels to just one goal.
The Squirrels’ first goal of the game came as Brent Machado sent a pass straight up the middle to Vivek Pinto, who caught it on his backhand and split the defense for a breakaway goal. The Squirrels had plenty more chances but the Whalers goaltender kept stonewalling them, until Stock scored with 1:17 left.
