Squirrels 3, Vikings 3

Playing against the top team in the league Sunday, the Screaming Squirrels knew they would have to at the very least shut down two players on the Vikings who not only are too good for the C division, but don’t even wear the same jersey as the rest of the team. The Squirrels succeeded just enough to earn a 3-3 tie.

Brent Machado got the scoring started at 13:48 of the first, but then one of the Vikings’ ringers skated around everyone and got a goal, and the score was tied after the first period.

In the second period, the Squirrels got goals from Ben Sumner and Rob Myers to go up 3-1, but a neutral-zone turnover cost the Squirrels soon after as the Vikings cut the score to 3-2.

The Squirrels had a golden opportunity in the third period with several power plays, including one that lasted four minutes, but instead yielded a shorthanded goal, and the score stood at 3-3.

Drew Thiemann made 25 saves in net as the Squirrels put up 29 shots. Sumner, Myers, Machado, Matt Borlik, Desi Richelsen, Tony Richelsen, Charles Wolstein, Greg Wenograd, Paul Kobernick and Brian Jackson played for the Squirrels.

The next game is Sunday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. against D.C. Fire.

Vikings 4, Squirrels 1

The Squirrels came into Wed. nights contest against the Vikings, riding a two game winning streak and proceeded to turn in one their worst and uninspired performances of the season falling 4-1.

The Squirrels lone highlight in a penalty filled affair was a 2nd period goal from Rob Myers assisted by Ed Bager and Chi Pham, cutting the Vikings lead 2-1.

That was as close as it would get as the Vikings added 2 more in the 3rd while the Squirrels failed to convert during a 5 on 3 advantage. Missing players included Sergio Balatan, Brian Jackson, Charles Wolstein, Adam Hughes and Ben Sumner, who missed his 2nd game in a row. The Squirrels are off for Thanksgiving break and return to action Nov. 30th at 9:55pm against DC Fire.

Squirrels 6, Vikings 0

When the Squirrels and Vikings matched up two and a half weeks ago, the Squirrels barely had enough players to start the game, and the Vikings took advantage. On Thursday, the Squirrels had subs aplenty, and ran away with a 6-0 victory in front of three fans at the Patrick rink.

The game started off slow as the teams skated through an uneventful first period. Finally, Matt Borlik found the net midway through the second period. A few minutes later, Borlik hit Greg Wenograd with a perfect centering pass and the Squirrels were up by two.

In the third period, the Vikings were clearly tired, and the Squirrels posted 22 shots on net – half of their total for the game – while scoring four more times. Rob Myers and Ed Bager got goals, and Tony Richelsen had the final two.

Drew Thiemann made 17 saves in net to get the team’s fifth shutout of the season. The Squirrels played without Don Marks and Adam Hughes. Chi Pham subbed on defense.

The next game is Monday, at 8:45 against the Wrong Stuff in Resor. The Squirrels close out the regular season Thursday at 10:40 in Logsdon, also against the Wrong Stuff.
