Squirrels Lose Close One to 1st Place Highlanders

Tony Richelsen scored the Squirrels’ lone goal of the night on the powerplay to give the Squirrels an early lead but it would not last as the Highlanders would answer with a goal later in the 1st period and the eventual game winner in the 2nd period to escape with the 2-1 win.

Richelsen’s dynamic rush up the ice and top shelf wrister to put the Squirrels up early on in the contest seemed to be a sign of more good things to come. However, the Highlanders were able to tie the game at 1 with a quick power play goal less than 10 minutes later.

Highlander defenseman Joe Burkhardt broke the tie with an end-to-end rush, beating goalie Eric Coulson 5-hole with a wrister halfway through the 2nd period. It would be all the scoring the Highlanders would need. Goalie Ernie Miller would shut the door and deny every single Squirrel chance that would follow.

The loss leaves the Squirrels with a record of 11-8-1, good for 23 standings points and a tie for 5th place with the Piranhas. The final game of the regular season for the Squirrels is Sunday, March 27th, at 11AM.

Squirrels Lose 2-0 in Gassert’s Final Game

For the 2nd time in their past 3 games, the Squirrels were unable to get on the scoreboard, falling to the undefeated first place Highlanders, 2-0. The game marked defenseman Kyle Gassert’s final game in a Squirrels uniform.

From the opening face-off, the Squirrels seemed to be on their heels trying to contain the Highlanders’ superior team speed. The Squirrels were unable to sustain much pressure on Highlanders’ goalie Nicholas Labarre despite the scorekeeper’s apparent neurosis in awarding the Highlanders only 17 shots on goal versus giving the Squirrels 21. Puck possession was heavily in the Highlanders’ favor and for most of the game, the ice was tilted towards the Squirrels’ defensive zone.

The Highlanders were finally able to solve goalie Eric Coulson while enjoying a power play. Squirrels forward Brent Machado was sent to the box for an interference penalty and Highlanders forward Jeff Gellman buried a wicked wrister through a Squirrels’ defenseman’s legs and past Coulson’s blocker for the power play (and eventual game winning) tally.

It was Coulson’s only blemish on the night. Solid stops from the goalie included a double pad stack stick save sliding to his left on a rebound opportunity in the 1st period, and a Sportscenter worthy glove save on a 2-1 rush against in the 3rd.

Kyle Gassert joined the Squirrels during the Fall/Winter season of 2009-10 and was an important member of that team which almost went undefeated and won the Bronze 2 Championship. Known for his hard slapshot and smart and aggressive defensive play, Kyle was a popular guy in the locker room, always quick with a sly comment. He and the previously departed former Squirrel Mike Bronson, will be the founding members of the Squirrels’ second iteration in the Chicago metropolitan area. Who will be the next Squirrel to depart for the midwest? Cheers to you Kyle. Kyle ends his Squirrels ice career with 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points along with 20 PIMs in 28 regular season games and 4 assists and 2 PIMs in the Squirrels’ 3-game march to the 09-10 league championship.

Ice: Squirrels Fall to Highlanders

The Squirrels put up 28 shots Sunday, but could only sneak one through, and fell to the Highlanders, 2-1. A couple of the Highlanders felt the need to go after the Squirrels after the buzzer – and even dropped the gloves – then felt the need to complain to the refs about the Squirrels standing up for themselves. It was the most tears the Squirrels have ever seen opponents shed after a win.

Ice: Squirrels Battle Back for Victory

For the third straight game, the Screaming Squirrels surrendered the first goal of the game, but unlike last week’s 4-2 defeat, the Squirrels’ opponents weren’t able to build on their early lead, and timely goals from the Flying Finn, Tero Moberg, and assistant captain Ben Sumner were all that would be needed to knock off a strong Highlanders team.

Goalie Eric Coulson had a very strong game in net, seeing the puck extremely well, making all the saves he should have, and keeping rebound opportunities to a bare minimum. There was little to be done on the one Highlanders goal, as an errant pass (or was it a shot?) was deadened by defenseman Doug Winter, and landed right on the stick of Rahul Paris standing all alone just above Coulson’s crease. “I didn’t even know that guy was there all by himself. It’s like he materialized out of no where. I certainly would have made a different save selection had I’d known he was there.” No doubt, the double pad stack was not an ideal save selection.

But again, it was all the Highlander’s could muster. D-man Des Richelsen was throwing his ample weight around all night long after getting the verbal sparring going early with Highlander Joe Burkhardt. Former (and soon to be again?) Squirrel Jason Nehmer said post game, “What the hell was Des’s problem tonight? He nailed me hard twice.” Big Des took two penalties in the second period for playing the body rather than the puck, but he quickly learned his lesson and started playing the puck first, before dropping bombs on poor Highlander players. Des also brought the offense from the backend by spearheading the rush up ice that led to Sumner’s first of the young season, a well placed wrist shot along the ice.

Tero brought his typical junk yard dog mentality to the lineup for the first time this season (filling in for an injured Dan Carter and missing Rob Meyers) and scored what turned out to be the game winner on a perfectly placed wrist shot just inside the far post. Said the big Finn, “I was thinking I would try to go around him but then I looked and saw that spot.” Well played sir!

The Squirrel’s penalty killing deserves mention as well. The Highlander’s were 0-5 on the PP despite what seemed like ample time in the zone. Squirrel’s defensemen Winters and Charles Wolstein blocked shots with aplomb, forwards Tony Richelsen, Brent Machado, and Jeff Headlee denied time and space well and were ferocious battling for the puck, and rookies John Burke and Bill Rand were effective in clogging up passing lanes and generally creating havoc for the oncoming Highlanders.

A VERY satisfying win for the Squirrels against what most players thought was a somewhat more skilled Highlanders team. We buried our chances and denied theirs thanks to tenacious D and a stone wall in net.

Next game is Tuesday, May 18th @ 9:50 PM on the Resor rink against the Laughing Skulls. Who’s on beer duty?
