Squirrels Advance to Semifinals

The Winter Bronze 2 defending champions Screaming Squirrels began their title defense last night with a well-played 6-4 win over the 3rd seeded team, Strange Brew. Officially outshot 33-22, the Squirrels were able to capitalize early and then often to build a lead that they would never fully relinquish.

The Squirrels’ scoring came entirely from two players. Brent Machado scored three times and Tony Richelsen netted two. Two of Machado’s goals came on the power play, the first coming early in the 1st period, and the second after a wonderful passing play early in the 3rd. The early 3rd period goal would stand up to be the game winner but for good measure, Machado would finish off his hat-trick about five minutes later. Meanwhile, Richelsen’s first two goals came on spectacular end-to-end rushes. Fellow defenseman Don Marks said, “Every time they (Strange Brew) dump it in the corner, it’s like a breakaway for Tony.” After leading all Squirrels in playoff scoring last year, Tony is well on his way to repeating the feat this season. But can he hold off regular season scoring leader Brent for the playoff scoring lead?

The Squirrels dominated the special teams play, scoring on 2 of 4 power play opportunities and killing off all three short-handed situations. Assists were credited to Rob Myers (2), Machado, Chi Pham, Ben Sumner, and goalie Eric Coulson who was all over the score sheet with 29 saves on 33 shots, the lone assist on Richelsen’s 2nd goal, and a tripping penalty in the 3rd period.

The Squirrels opponent in the divisional semi-finals is undetermined until the last quarterfinal game between the Highlanders and Laughing Skulls is played on 4/5. The other winners of quarterfinal games were the 7th seeded DC Fire with a stunning upset of the 2nd seeded Heineken Light, and the 4th seeded Piranhas beating the Bullets. Assuming the top seeded Highlanders handle the Laughing Skulls, the Squirrels will play the Piranhas on 4/7 @ 9:40. If the Skulls manage to upset the Highlanders, then the Squirrels would play DC Fire (their only meeting this season) in the same time slot.

Squirrels Lose Close One to 1st Place Highlanders

Tony Richelsen scored the Squirrels’ lone goal of the night on the powerplay to give the Squirrels an early lead but it would not last as the Highlanders would answer with a goal later in the 1st period and the eventual game winner in the 2nd period to escape with the 2-1 win.

Richelsen’s dynamic rush up the ice and top shelf wrister to put the Squirrels up early on in the contest seemed to be a sign of more good things to come. However, the Highlanders were able to tie the game at 1 with a quick power play goal less than 10 minutes later.

Highlander defenseman Joe Burkhardt broke the tie with an end-to-end rush, beating goalie Eric Coulson 5-hole with a wrister halfway through the 2nd period. It would be all the scoring the Highlanders would need. Goalie Ernie Miller would shut the door and deny every single Squirrel chance that would follow.

The loss leaves the Squirrels with a record of 11-8-1, good for 23 standings points and a tie for 5th place with the Piranhas. The final game of the regular season for the Squirrels is Sunday, March 27th, at 11AM.

Squirrels Shut Out Vikings

The offense came alive last night as the Squirrels downed the Vikings, 9-0. It took a little while for things to get going, but once it did, it was raining goals on Vikings goalie Greg Mumma. It was enough to make a goalie cry!

Leading the way for the Squirrels was Brent Machado with 2 goals and 3 assists, Mark Tessar with 3 goals, and Tony Richelsen with a goal and 2 assists. Every Squirrels skater on the roster recorded at least one point.

After scoring only once in the opening 15 minute period, the Squirrels exploded for 5 in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd. Goalie Eric Coulson was not severely tested but did have to make a few strong saves to preserve the shutout.

With the win, the Squirrels move to 11-7-1 and 23 standings points, good for 4th in the Bronze 2 Division with 2 games remaining. Next game is Sunday, March 20th against the first place Highlanders.

Squirrels 4, Brewins 2

The Squirrels got back to their winning ways with a solid, if unspectacular 4-2 win against a Brewins squad that came into the game with only a 4-12-0 record but winners of 2 straight.

The Brewins opened the game’s scoring when Chris Olson managed to bank a lose puck from behind the net, off the back of Coulson’s leg before he could recover to hug the post, and into the net. However, the Squirrels would answer only a minute later when Bob Valdes scored an unassisted goal on a beautiful rush into the zone and with a pinpoint wrist shot to beat Brewins goalie McNeil blocker side. The period ended with a 2-1 Squirrels lead thanks to a beautifully ugly goal by the team’s leading goal scorer, Brent Machado. Ben Sumner won a faceoff just outside of the offensive zone, gathered his win and threw a good wrist shot at McNeil. The rebound kicked out to a charging Machado and he gathered the loose puck, waited a split second for McNeil to commit, then buried the puck. Ugly goals are a thing of beauty!!

The Brewins would tie the score at 2 with a quick goal only :50 seconds into the 2nd period. Two Brewins were left alone down low. A shot from high in the zone was deflected off the post by a lone Brewin standing to Coulson’s left. The puck caromed off the post and rolled along the goal line to come to rest on the other post. Coulson, being down and out as a result of the initial shot and deflection, was unable to scramble across to swipe at or cover the loose puck and it was eventually tapped in by Kali Wood. The Squirrels would break the tie 11 minutes later when Mark Tessar scored his 3rd of the year on a great pass from behind the net from Mike Ricci. It would be all the Squirrels would need.

The only scoring in the 3rd period was an insurance marker from the Squirrels’ Bob Valdes with his 2nd of the game. The Brewins never really threatened in the 3rd and time eventually ran out for them. Despite the Brewins pulling their goalie to try to mount a comeback, a couple of attempts from the Squirrels to pot an empty netter were not successful.

Complete Game from Squirrels Downs Heineken Light

The Squirrels brought their “A” game to the rink and put forth a total team effort for a very satisfying win against a strong Heineken Light team. Coming into the game, the Squirrels were 4 points back of Heineken Light and in a 2-way tie for 4th place in the Bronze 2 Division. With the win, they now sit in a 2-way tie for 3rd in the Division with next week’s opponent, the Bullets, and only 2 points behind Heineken Light.

The Squirrels held a 2-1 lead after the 1st period on the strength of goals by Rob Myers and Charles Wolstein sandwiched around a goal for Heineken Light by Justin Sybenga. Myers’ goal was his 4th of the season while Wolstein broke his season long goal scoring drought to pot his 1st.

An early 2nd period goal by Brent Machado, his team leading 9th of the season, gave the Squirrels a bit more breathing room before Heineken Light’s leading scorer, Drake Deming, got his team back within 1 with a well placed wrist shot, beating goalie Eric Coulson glove side. Meanwhile, Heineken Light goalie, Jason Brodnax made some keys saves to keep his mates within striking distance.

With the score 3-2 to start the 3rd period, the teams battled back and forth with chances generated in both ends. Machado scored his 2nd of the game and 10th of the season to re-establish the 2 goal cushion for the Squirrels and it would end up being the game winner. Deming was able to bring his team back to within 1 once more with another blistering wrist shot that beat Coulson 5-hole, but the Squirrels defense denied any more quality scoring chances.  Myers scored his 2nd goal into the empty net to seal the win.

Coulson ended the night with 24 saves, assists were credited to “Biker” Bob Valdes (2), Donnie “shoots it wide” Marks, Chi “???” Pham, Jeff “Look ma! No penalties tonight” Bobeck, and Jason Nehmer “Esq.” and Ben “can’t feel his legs” Sumner suffered 2 debilitating calf muscle cramps. A collection will be started to replace his wonky calf muscles with bionic ones.

Next up for the Squirrels is a battle with the Bullets on Wednesday, February 16th, at 10:10PM on the Resor rink.
