Squirrels Can’t Hold Lead, Settle for Tie

Desi Richelsen, Bob Valdes, Tero Moberg and Rob Myers in the new uniform.

The Squirrels were up 2-0 against D.C. Fire going into a rare five-minute power play, but they gave up a short-handed goal with five seconds remaining in the second, and couldn’t convert on several more power plays in the third. Late in the third, they gave up the tying goal just seconds into a penalty kill and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie.

Squirrels 5, D.C. Fire 5

The Squirrels put together their best comeback of the season Sunday, scoring four goals in the third period to earn a 5-5 draw against D.C. Fire.

The Squirrels were down 3-0 in the first two periods before Desi Richelsen’s individual scoring effort in the second period gave life back to the Squirrels. D.C. Fire scored again to go up 4-1 in the third period. Then the Squirrels woke up, as Greg Wenograd, Brent Machado and Tony Richelsen scored to tie the game, 4-4. Then D.C. Fire took the lead again late in the third period, but it didn’t hold as Machado scored his second of the game.

The Squirrels had a chance to win the game late in the third – while killing a two-man advantage. Tony Richelsen’s pressure led to a scoring opportunity, but the puck sailed wide. Fortunately, the Squirrels killed off the rest of the game with two men in the box and the Fire’s goaltender pulled.

Machado, the Richelsens, Wenograd, Matt Borlik, Ben Sumner, Phil Van der Vossen, Jon Magi, Charles Wolstein and Brian Jackson played for the Squirrels, with Drew Thiemann in net. The Squirrels were listed as putting up 19 shots on goal in the third period, while only having six in each of the first two. The Squirrels outshot Fire, 31-28.

The last game of the regular season is Wednesday, at 9:30 p.m. against the Mighty Old Ducks.

D.C. Fire 7, Squirrels 5

The Squirrels gave up an uncharacteristic seven goals Thursday as the D.C. Fire came away with a 7-5 victory after six lead-changes.

The Squirrels got the scoring started in the first period as Ben Sumner centered to Brent Machado, who roofed a shot to give the Squirrels the lead. The Fire scored the next two goals, the second of which came on a power play.

In the second period, Tony Richelsen – playing defense – made several nifty moves into the zone but his shot sailed wide. The puck eventually came to Paul Kobernick, who swatted it home from the left side of the net. The Fire scored a minute later, then Ed Bager scored on a power play to tie the game again. The Squirrels took the lead midway through the second period on a very bizarre play. As the teams skated 4-on-4, Desi Richelsen shot the puck toward the goaltender from the Squirrels’ zone. The Fire’s goaltender then hit it to a defenseman, but the puck bounced off of him and went in. Unfortunately for the Squirrels, that lead didn’t hold, as the Fire scored a minute later on the power play, then on yet another power play with 42 seconds remaining in the period to retake the lead, 5-4.

Sumner scored at 10:10 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5, but the Fire scored the final two goals.

The Squirrels posted 29 shots on goal, including 16 in the final period, as the Fire shot 30.

The Squirrels played without Matt Borlik, Chi Pham, Wade Marks and Sergio Balatan. The next game is Sunday, Dec. 3, at 10:30 p.m. against the Mighty Old Ducks in the Patrick rink.
