Roller: Squirrels 4, Jesters 3

In one of the weirdest games of the season, the Squirrels pulled away from the Jesters on Thursday and held on in the second game of the night for both teams.

Both teams skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period, as the Squirrels survived being down a man for five minutes. Just two shifts into the second period, the teams traded goals in a nine-second span.  Mark Tessar scored his second of the game a few minutes later, then got a natural hattrick on the power play. Don Marks pushed the score to 4-1 with just 3:10 remaining.

But the Jesters weren’t done, scoring once with two minutes remaining, then somehow snuck in a shot with under a minute left to put the game within reach.

The Squirrels, however, killed off the rest, before an errant clear sailed across the rink and into the netting, giving the Jesters one last offensive-zone face-off with a second remaining. The Squirrels survived, leapfrogging the Jesters back into first place.

Roller: Squirrels 7, Team Mylec 1

Though the Squirrels beat Team Mylec 7-1 on Wednesday, the real story was the defense, as Bob Sewell made 33 saves and the Squirrels blocked quite a few shots while earning their fourth win in a row. The victory let the Squirrels leapfrog Team Mylec in the standings and put them only one point out of first.

Stu Miller had a first-period hattrick and Casey Carpenter scored one of his own to lead the Squirrels. Miller also had two assists.

Roller: Squirrels 7, Whale 4

The Squirrels won their second game in two nights with a slightly different lineup Thursday, this time outscoring Whale, 7-4. Despite the loss, Whale played a great game, outshooting the Squirrels and oftentimes controlling the offensive zone as if they were on a power play, though they weren’t. The Squirrels, however, opened the floodgates, as both Casey Carpenter and Stu Miller each scored three goals, while Mark Tessar had the other.

The Squirrels held a 5-2 lead at the half, then extended it to 6-2 before both teams went another 13 minutes without scoring. The Whale cut the lead to two with 38 seconds remaining but the Squirrels not only held on, but netted another, and improved their record to 3-2 on the season.
