Squirrels 9, Mighty Old Ducks 2

Desperately needing a victory going into the month-long break, the Squirrels clobbered the Mighty Old Ducks on Sunday, 9-2, in the teams’ first meeting ever.

Tony Richelsen had four goals, Rob Myers added two, and Ben Sumner, Brent Machado, and Matt Borlik each had one.

The Squirrels played without Drew Thiemann, Don Marks, Wade Marks, Sergio Balatan, Paul Kobernick, Chris Long, Greg Wenograd, Phil Van der Vossen and Brian Jackson. Brian Rimm played in net. No penalties were called in the game.

The next game is January 2, 2007, at 10:25 p.m. against Dog Star in the Resor rink. The Squirrels last met Dog Star back in April in the C-League championship game, which the Squirrels won, 2-1.

D.C. Fire 7, Squirrels 5

The Squirrels gave up an uncharacteristic seven goals Thursday as the D.C. Fire came away with a 7-5 victory after six lead-changes.

The Squirrels got the scoring started in the first period as Ben Sumner centered to Brent Machado, who roofed a shot to give the Squirrels the lead. The Fire scored the next two goals, the second of which came on a power play.

In the second period, Tony Richelsen – playing defense – made several nifty moves into the zone but his shot sailed wide. The puck eventually came to Paul Kobernick, who swatted it home from the left side of the net. The Fire scored a minute later, then Ed Bager scored on a power play to tie the game again. The Squirrels took the lead midway through the second period on a very bizarre play. As the teams skated 4-on-4, Desi Richelsen shot the puck toward the goaltender from the Squirrels’ zone. The Fire’s goaltender then hit it to a defenseman, but the puck bounced off of him and went in. Unfortunately for the Squirrels, that lead didn’t hold, as the Fire scored a minute later on the power play, then on yet another power play with 42 seconds remaining in the period to retake the lead, 5-4.

Sumner scored at 10:10 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5, but the Fire scored the final two goals.

The Squirrels posted 29 shots on goal, including 16 in the final period, as the Fire shot 30.

The Squirrels played without Matt Borlik, Chi Pham, Wade Marks and Sergio Balatan. The next game is Sunday, Dec. 3, at 10:30 p.m. against the Mighty Old Ducks in the Patrick rink.

Vikings 4, Squirrels 1

The Squirrels came into Wed. nights contest against the Vikings, riding a two game winning streak and proceeded to turn in one their worst and uninspired performances of the season falling 4-1.

The Squirrels lone highlight in a penalty filled affair was a 2nd period goal from Rob Myers assisted by Ed Bager and Chi Pham, cutting the Vikings lead 2-1.

That was as close as it would get as the Vikings added 2 more in the 3rd while the Squirrels failed to convert during a 5 on 3 advantage. Missing players included Sergio Balatan, Brian Jackson, Charles Wolstein, Adam Hughes and Ben Sumner, who missed his 2nd game in a row. The Squirrels are off for Thanksgiving break and return to action Nov. 30th at 9:55pm against DC Fire.

Squirrels 7, Exit First Realty 2

The Squirrels came into Sunday’s game fresh off a 10-1 blowout win and picked up where the they left off with 5 first period goals. After spotting Exit First a 1-0 lead, Paul Kobernick got the Squirrels on the board with a shot beating the goalie to his left side. Sergio Balatan, making his season debut, picked up the assist. Three minutes later Ed Bager forced a turnover at the Squirrels blue line, tipping the pass forward to Matt Borlik for a pretty breakaway goal with a defenseman draped all over his back. From there, the flood gates opened, as Adam Hughes knocked in rebound, and Tony Richelsen and Chris Long each added a goal to close out the first period with Squirrels leading 5-1.

From there the game got sloppy as the second period featured 9 penalties, 6 for Exit First and 3 for the Squirrels. Exit First added a goal to close the gap to 5-2. The third period was more of the same as the two teams combined for 7 more penalties, 2 for Exit and 5 more for the Squirrels. Fortunately for the Squirrels it didn’t cost them as T. Richelsen added a power play goal and Drew Thiemann chipped in a tally (after giving up one) as the clock expired.

Goalie Brian Rimm, subbing for Thiemann in net, played brilliantly, stopping 19 shots while the Squirrels peppered Exit First with 26 shots total. The Squirrels played without Don Marks, Wade Marks, Chi Pham, Charles Wolstein, Greg Wenograd and Ben Sumner, who missed his first Squirrels game (ice and roller) in nearly three years. Cal Ripken Jr.’s streak is safe for now. The Squirrels next game is Wed. night, 10:25 against the Vikings.

Scurvy 2, Squirrels 1

The Squirrels are aware that it’s not always the best idea to call a timeout when the faceoff is in the defensive zone. Saturday night, they found themselves in a situation in which they needed to… and it cost them.

With about three minutes left to go in the game, the Squirrels had just killed a two-man power play and found their lines in disarray as play continued for several minutes without a whistle. Scurvy won the faceoff, kept the puck in the zone and eventually scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory.

Back from Montana and playing his first game since 2005, Wade Marks scored at 8:04 of the first period to give the Squirrels the lead. Scurvy tied the game five minutes later and the 1-1 score stood for much of the game.

Drew Thiemann made 29 saves for the Squirrels, who posted 29 shots. The Squirrels played without Sergio Balatan, Ed Bager, Chris Long, Greg Wenograd, Phil Van der Vossen and Matt Borlik.

The next game is Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 10:30 p.m. against The Wrong Stuff.
