Roller: Dinosaurs 4, Squirrels 3

Posted on by

The Squirrels played the Dinosaurs tighter than their past several matches Tuesday, even taking a 3-2 lead in the third, but the Dinosaurs proved to be too much as they won 4-3.

The Squirrels scored first, as Vivek Pinto backhanded a shot in on a two-on-one break. But the Dinosaurs scored the next two, taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Greg Hainer’s shot from the point on a bouncing puck found its way into the net, and Charles Warner scored less than a minute later to give the Squirrels the lead. The Squirrels got a power play late in the period and that proved to be a turning point, as the Dinosaurs kept possession of the puck, playing keep-away, before scoring shorthanded. A breakaway a few minutes later put them up for good. The Dinosaurs then killed off time with their possession game and the Squirrels dropped to 2-1 on the season.

Ice: Squirrels 5, Whalers 1

Posted on by

The Squirrels won their third in a row Wednesday, walloping the Whalers, 5-1. But much of the game was closer than the final score, as the Whalers scored first, holding the lead until the end of the first when Brent Machado smacked in a rebound to tie the game. Jon Danziger and Tony Richelsen both scored in a penalty-filled second period. The Squirrels took a 4-1 lead early in the third as Danziger scored his second, but there was plenty of time remaining. The Whalers, however, didn’t take advantage of their much deeper bench, as the Squirrels kept possession of the puck for much of the third period. Terry Young put the game out of reach with a goal at 8:46, as the Squirrels milked the clock the rest of the game.

Roller: Squirrels 9, Silver Spring 1; Squirrels 7, Whale 4

Posted on by

With a brand new inline floor for the first time in 15 years, the Squirrels shook off the early season jitters, dominating both games of a double header Tuesday with several new teammates.

In the first game, the Squirrels took a while to find the net against Silver Spring, but once they did, the goals kept coming. Casey Carpenter, back with the Squirrels after missing last season, led the team with three goals and three assists.

In her first roller game in 17 years, Amy Reich scored and added three assists. New player Arie Stock scored twice with two assists, and the other new player, Marc Irby had a goal and an assist. Vivek Pinto also scored twice.

That was the first game. For the second against Whale, Carpenter had to leave but Charles Warner filled in. Don Marks, Reich, Greg Hainer, Ben Sumner, Warner, Irby and Stock each scored for the Squirrels.

Squirrels 7, Laughing Skulls 6

Posted on by

The Screaming Squirrels spotted the Laughing Skulls four straight goals early in the game Wednesday. What looked to be a total curb-stomp turned out differently, however, as the Squirrels snipped in 7, taking a 7-5 lead late into the third period, and holding on for a 7-6 win.

Down 4, a rare first-period time out proved to be the turning point for the Squirrels, as things took a turn for the better. The Squirrels scored three straight but gave up another, trailing 5-3 after the first period.

It was all Squirrels in the second period, which included four goals and a successful 5-on-3 penalty kill which lasted nearly 1:45.

The Skulls scored one late in the game but the Squirrels held on. Jon Danziger scored four, while Fred Festa, Moose Cobb and Don Marks each had a goal.
