Squirrels 5, Laughing Skulls 2

The Squirrels played a complete and competitive game Sunday, beating the Laughing Skulls, 5-2.

Tony Richelsen opened the scoring just over ten minutes in the first period as he skated from the left to right side and flung the puck to the far side to five the Squirrels the lead. Shortly after, Demetri Bedel scored his first goal as a Squirrel, assisted by Dave Chung. The Skulls got on the board, however, as Sarah Modzelewski’s spinning backhander in the slot got past goalie Craig Beatty.

In the second, Tero Moberg chased his rebound into the corner, flung the puck toward the center and hit the goalie’s skate, which bounced in, and gave the Squirrels a 3-2 lead. Modzelewski had her second of the game moments later. A few minutes later, Bedel passed to Ben Sumner, who found Tim Stump in the corner who scored to give the Squirrels a 4-2 lead.

The Squirrels had a late second-period power play, and another in the third period, but couldn’t get much going. Down the stretch, Chung added an empty-netter.

Beatty made 22 saves as the Squirrels were credited with 35 shots.
