Squirrels 5, Mighty Old Ducks 1

The Mighty Old Ducks could argue that they had a moral victory in the Squirrels’ 5-1 win Thursday, as they lost by only four goals, an improvement over two losses last season. Though the Squirrels controlled the majority of the game, it was only 1-0 after the first period as the Squirrels couldn’t score in bunches though the shots kept coming.

Rob Myers got on the board first with a breakaway at 12:51 of the first period. In the second period, Dan Carter netted a goal and Brent Machado scored on a deflection. Chi Pham and Ben Sumner added two more in the third before the Ducks got on the board.

There was one stat, however, that was even more disproportionate than the score: The Squirrels’ 30-5 shot advantage.

Sumner, Carter, Myers, Pham, Matt Borlik, Greg Wenograd, Brent Machado, Charles Wolstein, Jon Magi, Don Marks, Chris Wautel and Drew Thiemann played for the Squirrels, who improved to 4-0 on the season.

The next game is Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 10 p.m. against the Nordiques.

Squirrels 6, Mighty Old Ducks 0

In desperate need of a win, instead of just a moral victory, the Screaming Squirrels beat up on the Mighty Old Ducks on Wednesday with a 6-0 victory.

Matt Borlik got the scoring started a couple of minutes into the game, then Brent Machado got a power play goal and Greg Wenograd got one to put the Squirrels up 3-0. The Squirrels killed off four minor penalties – including a 5 on 3 – in the period before Machado scored his second with two minutes to go.

After an uneventful second period, Wenograd scored his second of the game at 11:55 of the third period, and Borlik scored his second of the game with 6:23 remaining.

A bit of unruliness broke out with :19 to go in the game, leading to Desi Richelsen’s one-game suspension for excessive penalties.

The Squirrels now head to the playoffs to defend their championship, and will finish in either 5th or 6th place depending on the outcome of the Gnu-Nordiques game on Sunday. If Gnu wins or ties, the Squirrels will play on Wednesday, otherwise they will play Tuesday.

Squirrels 9, Mighty Old Ducks 2

Desperately needing a victory going into the month-long break, the Squirrels clobbered the Mighty Old Ducks on Sunday, 9-2, in the teams’ first meeting ever.

Tony Richelsen had four goals, Rob Myers added two, and Ben Sumner, Brent Machado, and Matt Borlik each had one.

The Squirrels played without Drew Thiemann, Don Marks, Wade Marks, Sergio Balatan, Paul Kobernick, Chris Long, Greg Wenograd, Phil Van der Vossen and Brian Jackson. Brian Rimm played in net. No penalties were called in the game.

The next game is January 2, 2007, at 10:25 p.m. against Dog Star in the Resor rink. The Squirrels last met Dog Star back in April in the C-League championship game, which the Squirrels won, 2-1.
