Squirrels 5, Laughing Skulls 2

The Screaming Squirrels won their eighth in a row Sunday with a  victory against the Laughing Skulls.

The Squirrels started strong with a goal only 15 seconds in, as Rob Myers collected a rebound off the back boards and the game was 1-0 in no time. But the Squirrels struggled the rest of the period, giving up two goals – including a power play goal – and found themselves feeling rusty after going nearly two weeks without a game.

Then Jon Danziger’s 5-on-3 power play goal in the second period, and Brent Machado’s go-ahead goal near the end of the period, put the Squirrels back in the driver’s seat going into the final period.

The game was still well within reach for the Skulls in the third period, and they had an opportunity with a 5-minute power play, but the Squirrels drew a minor penalty during it and killed the rest. With about five minutes left, Danziger scored again, as did Mark Tessar, to put Squirrels up 5-2.

Tessar and Machado also had two assists.

Squirrels 10, Home Visions 9 (SO)

In the highest scoring game of the season, the Squirrels and Home Visions battled it out through three periods before settling the score in a shootout, where Tony Richelsen’s lone goal provided the difference.

The Squirrels got off to an extremely quick start, scoring on the first shift on a goal from Rob Myers. Myers then scored the second goal of the game on his very next shift. Home Visions scored before Tony Richelsen and Jon Danziger put the Squirrels up 4-1, but a late goal by Home Visions made it 4-2.

Tom Fischer and Danziger both scored in the second period, but Home Visions put up three of their own as the Squirrels held a 6-5 lead going into the third. That’s when Home Visions scored four of the next five goals, taking a 9-7 lead with about half the period remaining. But in a span of 22 seconds, Fischer and Myers netted two more goals, but there would be no more scoring for the rest of the period as the score stood at 9-9.

The shootout went beyond the standard three rounds as both goaltenders kept the puck out of the net. Richelsen’s goal in the fourth round and Nabil Allaoua’s remarkable saves gave the Squirrels the victory, their seventh in a row.

Despite the nine goals, the Squirrels still have given up the fewest goals in the league this season.

Squirrels 8, Pucks Deep 1

It took an entire period for anything to happen, but once the Squirrels started scoring, they hardly stopped. Jon Danziger had four goals and new father Tony Richelsen had two goals and three assists to lead the Squirrels to an 8-1 victory against Pucks Deep on Sunday. It was the second straight game when the Squirrels played with only three subs, but that didn’t stop them from dominating in the offensive zone.

The Squirrels gave up their only goal in the closing seconds of the game, which was sped up by the running clock in the third period.

Squirrels 8, Heineken Light 5

Future Squirrel Nicholas Sean Richelsen was born Jan. 11. He weighed 8 pounds 10 ounces and is 20 1/4 inches long. Father Tony missed the game because he forgot what time it was.

Future Squirrel Nicholas Sean Richelsen was born Jan. 11. Father Tony missed the game because he forgot what time it was.

In one of the oddest games of the season, the Squirrels came away with an 8-5 victory despite having only three men on the bench. The five goals was the most they’ve given up all season, but the eight was also a tie for the most they’ve scored.

Up 2-0 in the first, the Squirrels then surrendered three straight, but several fortunate bounces – along with some incredible passes – helped the Squirrels score four of the next five in the second period.

Heineken Light cut the Squirrels’ lead to one early in the second period, but Jon Danziger’s two goals (three total, plus two assists), padded the lead with more than ten minutes remaining, and the Squirrels held on.

The Squirrels remain in second place behind Blades of Steel.
