Solid Play Boosts Squirrels

With a relatively short bench, the Screaming Squirrels posted a 5-3 victory against Heineken Light on Saturday. The Squirrels took a 2-0 lead in the first period before Heineken tied it up early in the second. The Squirrels then scored three straight and held on for the victory. Tony Richelsen, Kyle Gassert, Rob Myers, Chi Pham and Tero Moberg scored for the Squirrels, who improved to 14-1.

Scurvy 5, Squirrels 0

The Screaming Squirrels lost their first game of the season Thursday, 5-0, against Scurvy. The Squirrels are now 13-1.

Also, it was longtime Squirrels teammate Chris Long’s last game. We wish him well in New York.

Squirrels 5, Nordiques 3

The Screaming Squirrels gave the Nordiques four power plays Monday, found themselves down 2-1 early in the second period, but then regrouped and skated off to a 5-3 victory. Tero Moberg scored the first two for the Squirrels, both on very soft shots. Only 22 seconds after Moberg’s second goal, Ben Sumner got his first goal of the season from the right corner as he passed the puck in front of the net and it bounced off a defender and in. Defenseman Kyle Gassert scored to cap off a three-goal third period. The Nordiques’ Hector Rosario (and Squirrel roller teammate) cut the Squirrels lead to 4-3 but then Sumner redirected a Gassert slap-shot to the top netting.

The Squirrels improved to 14-0, and are now tied for the best offense in the league with the Piranhas.

Long, Bronson Ditching Squirrels

Clearly scared of playing hockey any longer, longtime ice and roller Squirrel Chris Long, and ice capade goon Mike Bronson are each moving out of the area. Long is off to New York, and Bronson is off to Chicago.

While they will be missed, they will still be around for a few more games and a going away party is in the works.

Win vs. Vikings Gets Ugly

The Squirrels steamrolled a team that seemed to have far more talent than they used. The Vikings showed every sign of being able to score goals, but a tight defensive game by the Squirrels held them to only two goals as the Squirrels forced a running clock late in the second period. With tempers hot, things got ugly unnecessarily.
