Roller Playoffs: Team Mylec 10, Squirrels 9 (OT)

Posted on by

The Squirrels suffered probably their biggest upset in years Tuesday, falling to Team Mylec, 10-9, in overtime of round 1. This was a team the Squirrels beat 10-0 last week. The winning goal came on an own-goal with about 30 seconds remaining in overtime. The Squirrels last lost to Team Mylec in 2013, the only other time in five years.

Roller: Squirrels 8, High Rollers 6

Posted on by

The Screaming Squirrels locked up 2nd place with an 8-6 win against the High Rollers on Thursday in the regular season finale. It was no easy task, however, as a shorthanded High Rollers squad put up a fight.

The Squirrels got the scoring started as Charles Warner scored a minute in. High Rollers tied it before Warner fired a shot to the top left corner, atoning for two missed breakaways before that.

High Rollers scored two more goals to close out the period, and the Squirrels were facing a 3-2 deficit.

It appeared the Squirrels found their grove as two goals by Vivek Pinto and one by Casey Carpenter put them up 5-3, but two quick High Rollers goals tied it up again.

The Squirrels got a late power play and needed to score. After a High Rollers player took a puck to his eye and left the game, Carpenter netted another to give the Squirrels the lead. Pinto scored his third shortly after, and Carpenter got a short-handed goal to put the Squirrels up 8-5. High Rollers scored late but the Squirrels held on.

With four points int he final game, Vivek Pinto took over as the Squirrels’ scoring leader for the season. He and Carpenter led the team with 17 goals each. Amy Reich led the team in assists with 15.

Despite not scoring a goal for the first 7:50 of the game, the Squirrels put up 8 first period goals Tuesday en route to an easy 10-0 victory against Team Mylec. This was without their two most prolific scorers, Amy Reich and Casey Carpenter. To Team Mylec’s credit, they didn’t give up, pressing to the very end. Ed Owen, who played in net for the Squirrels, had a 15-save shutout.

Vivek Pinto led the Squirrels with 3 goals and 3 assists.

Roller: Squirrels 3, TWSS 2

Posted on by

A nearly complete Squirrels squad played Tuesday, winning but hardly putting together their best effort in a 3-2 victory against That’s What She Said.

The only missing player for the Squirrels was goaltender Stu Miller , who was watching from the stands as he nursed an ankle injury. The High Rollers’ goalie played in his place.

Marc Irby and Casey Carpenter scored to put the Squirrels up 2-0 in the first, but TWSS kept pressing and winning many races to the puck. They scored in the first, and seven minutes into the second as the teams were tied 2-2 down the stretch. A late power play for the Squirrels yielded chances but no goal. Finally, Carpenter netter his second late in the game to give the Squirrels a 3-2 lead, keeping them in second place in the league.

Ice: Squirrels 4, Hockey Donkeys 3

Posted on by

The Squirrels barely survived a late game flurry Tuesday, getting lucky that one extra second wasn’t on the clock, as they managed a 4-3 win that wasn’t as close as the final score seemed.

Hockey Donkeys got on the board in the first period, but a 5-on-3 power play early in the second helped net them two goals in the first three minutes. Tony Richelsen scored the first from the blue line, then Ben Sumner smacked in a rebound after Vivek Pinto’s shot. Shortly after, Rob Meyers scored, then Jon Danziger roofed a shot as the Squirrels went up 4-1 going into the third.

The Squirrels played fine in the third period, keeping the puck and developing several chances. But Hockey Donkeys found the net about midway through, killed a penalty, then had a mad scramble in the closing minutes. They scored again with 42 second remaining, and got a shot away at the buzzer which hit the goalie and went in. But it was too late, and the Squirrels came away with the victory in the regular season finally.

Brent Machado led the Squirrels in scoring with 20 points, including a league-leading 14 assists, while Danziger led the team in goals with 11. The Squirrels finished in fourth place, though several of the losses came early against the higher division.
