Magi Out, W. Marks In
Squirrels defenseman and veteran hockey player Jon Magi has opted for surgery to repair an ACL tear. He doesn’t expect to be playing until the fall ice season at the earliest, which means he’ll miss the summer roller and ice season. Magi has already missed the last several games, and the Squirrels dearly miss him out on the ice. He injured his knee while skiiing in Aspen during the first week of February.
The Squirrels have already found a replacement for him on the roller squad. Ice sniper Wade Marks will be joining the team, while also remaining on the ice roster. Wade is the brother of longtime Squirrels player Don Marks, and is currently the ice team’s co-leader in goals-scored with his brother.
The Squirrels now have two sets of brothers on the roller team, the Marks brothers, and the Richelsons, Desi and Tony.
Bulldogs 4, Squirrels 3
Bad Penalties, and Penalty Kill Dooms Squirrels
The combination of taking bad penalties and failing to kill them put the Squirrels in a hole Sunday in Columbia, and they fell to the Bulldogs, 4-3, despite having twice as many shots.
Down 3-0 midway through the second period, the Squirrels put on a furious comeback, scoring three times in only a matter of minutes. It began with a deep zone turnover. Philip Van der Vossen collected a puck in the right corner, sent it to the point, where Don Marks skated in and slammed it home to get the Squirrels on the board. On the next shift, Matt Borlik knocked in a rebound off the goaltender from behind the goal-line After the face-off, the Squirrels marched it into the zone and passed it around before Marks, with a beautiful series of moves, netted another slap shot. Then the period ended, as did the Squirrels’ momentum. The third period yielded one goal on the Bulldog’s power play, and despite a late flurry, the Squirrels couldn’t recover. The Squirrels finished with 24 shots on goal while holding the Bulldogs to 12.
Don Marks celebrates after his 2nd goal. The final score and teams exchange handshakes. Jared Genser, Joseph Wu, Jon Magi and Chi Pham missed the game for the Squirrels. The next game is Sunday, March 6, at 10:30 p.m. in Rockville against the Stingrays. The Squirrels are 2-0 lifetime against them.
Squirrels 6, Green Hornets 3
The Screaming Squirrels had two goals disallowed Sunday, and still skated away with a 6-3 victory against the Green Hornets at Wheaton Outdoor. The Squirrels are now 3-0 lifetime against the Hornets, who find themselves on the outside looking in on the playoffs.
Matt Borlik scored the first two for the Squirrels, but what would have been a natural hat-trick was taken away because of a crease violation. Chi Pham then put the Squirrels up 3-0 before Borlik scored again. Pham, who had an exceptional game on defense, scored once more and also assisted on Wade Marks’s goal. Marks also added two assists, as did Sergio Balatan. Every line spent significant amounts of time in the Hornets’ zone, often making it look like a power play. Jared Genser, Jon Magi and Joe Wu missed the game for the Squirrels, as did Juan Canchasto, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday. The next game is Sunday, Feb. 27, 9:40 p.m. at the Columbia rink against the Baltimore Bulldogs.
