Ice: Squirrels Fall in Finals

The Squirrels fell to the Piranhas in the Finals on Thursday, this time 4-2, after a couple of bad breaks. The Squirrels took a 1-0 lead, then in the course of eight seconds in the final minute of the first, gave up two goals. The Squirrels, however, scored with just two seconds remaining in the first period to tie it up. In the second period, the Squirrels were on the verge of retaking the lead, missed by inches, only for the Piranhas’ ringer (four points) to rush the length of the ice and score unassisted. They added another goal in the third.

The Squirrels are now gearing up for the winter season in a few weeks.

Ice: Squirrels Survive, Advance to Finals

Tricia and Desi Richelsen welcomed Kendall Nicole Richelsen to the world the morning of the game. Desi still played.

The Screaming Squirrels advanced to their second consecutive championship game Tuesday with a 4-3 victory against the fourth-seeded Renegades in a shootout.

The Squirrels took a 3-1 lead after two periods behind Tom Fischer’s hattrick (two on the power play), but a late two-man advantage gave the Renegades a fighting chance before they tied the game up with 15 seconds remaining.

The teams skated to a scoreless overtime before the shootout, when Tony Richelsen and Mark Tessar scored, and Nabil Allaoua made four saves to seal the win.

The Squirrels will play on Thursday at 9:20 on Resor against the Piranhas, who beat Fat Daddy in overtime, 4-3. This is the second consecutive season the teams will face each other for the championship.

Ice: Squirrels Advance

The Screaming Squirrels advance to the semi-finals Sunday with a 5-1 victory against the Laughing Skulls. Tom Fischer got the scoring started for the Squirrels only 29 seconds into the game. The Skulls tied it up in the second period, the Squirrels took the lead on a Rob Myers goal, but it wasn’t until a 2-man advantage late in the second period when the Squirrels took a commanding lead. Brent Machado and Tony Richelsen both scored on the power play only 45 seconds apart to put them up 4-1. The Squirrels held the lead in the third before Fischer added an empty net.

That should’ve been the end of the game. But instead, with only 12 seconds remaining, in one of the biggest punk moves of the season, Skull Matt Stea  started throwing punches at Desi Richelsen. Then, as if one knucklehead idiot causing trouble wasn’t enough, Jesse Nicholson of the Skulls came charging in, earning himself a third man in misconduct. Richelsen didn’t fight back only to ensure that he wouldn’t be suspended for the rest of the playoffs. Shea will be suspended for at least three games, and Nicholson will have to serve a game next season as well. But we’re all sure that it was worth it for Stea, because clearly there is nothing more important for him in life than starting a fight at a beer league hockey game.

Ice: Squirrels Finish First

The Squirrels played virtually the entire first period without a goaltender Sunday, giving up three empty netters but scoring four before Nabil Allaoua showed up and pitched a shut out the rest of the game for an 8-3 win. Tom Fischer’s hattrick secured his team points lead for the regular season. Meanwhile, the win also secured first place going into the playoffs as the Piranhas lost their final game.
