Panic 5, Squirrels 3

Posted on by

In a meaningless game for the Squirrels on Tuesday, they faltered, losing 5-3 to the lowly Panic, who gave themselves a shot at staying in 7th place in the standings. The Squirrels would have remained in 5th place either way, and will face either the Mastodons or the Highlanders in the first round of the playoffs. That game will be Sunday, April 12, at 9:40 p.m.

Squirrels Trade Tessar to Rangers

Posted on by
Tess and his wife, Megan.

Tess and his wife, Megan.

Mark Tessar played his final game for the Screaming Squirrels Friday, and will now ship off to New York where he will join his favorite team, the Rangers. In return, the Squirrels received nothing.

Since 2010, Tess played 150 games with the Squirrels, plus another 22 in the playoffs, for both ice and roller. This includes nine ice seasons. He scored 159 goals and had 103 assists, not including multiple shootout goals. He won one roller championship and was a member of three ice championships. He led the roller team in three of his five seasons, and led the league in 2011.

Now, he will move to New York with his wife, Megan, where he will work and play hockey for some other team on the downside of his athletic career. The Squirrels sent off Tess with a ticker-tape parade, including balloons and confetti, plus shots of Yuengling and punches to the gut.

Home Visions 4, Squirrels 3 (SO)

Posted on by

Badly outplayed, the Squirrels still came only inches from winning Friday, as they fell to the lowly Home Visions, who celebrated as if they won the championship.

Tied 2-2, Mark Tessar scored on a slap shot in his final game with the Squirrels to give them the lead down the stretch. A late penalty gave Home Visions a power play, plus an extra skater with an empty net. The Squirrels nearly got it in, missing by inches, but Home visions tied the game with 30 seconds remaining, then scored once on the shootout for the win.

The Squirrels have fifth place locked up, but have one game remaining on Tuesday against Panic.

Squirrels 6, Howard County Heat 2

After losing to Howard County Heat 11-2 back in December, the Squirrels knew they’d have their work cut out for them Sunday while only playing with eight skaters. But something was different. The Squirrels, who were down to one sub after Neil Shah skated away with an injury in the third period, exploded for four goals in the second period, and HCH couldn’t keep up in a 6-2 win.

Brent Machado and Charles Warner each scored a pair for the Squirrels, while Tero Moberg and Shah had the other. Merritt Lyon made 38 saves.

Squirrels 6, Laughing Skulls 5 (SO)

Posted on by

With only eight skaters on the Olympic rink, the Squirrels had their work cut out for them Wednesday. Up 3-0 in the first period, the Squirrels began to slow down a bit, as the Laughing Skulls marched back to tie the game at three. The Squirrels re-took the lead in the third and then gave up two goals down the stretch.

With less than two minutes remaining, the Squirrels tied the game, then took a penalty, then another, but held on for the tie. In the shootout, backup goaltender Herman Johal made a spectacular save in the first round, then two more to help the Squirrels win. Charles Warner, meanwhile, led the Squirrels with four goals and an assist, plus the lone shootout goal. Mark Tessar had the other goal.
