With only eight skaters – one fewer than Wolfe Pack – the Squirrels held on to a 2-1 lead for a good portion of the game Saturday before giving up a bunch of goals down the stretch in a 6-2 loss.
Wolfe Pack got on the board first, but Tony Richelsen and Vivek Pinto each scored to give the Squirrels a 2-1 lead going into the second period.
The Squirrels thought they caught a break in the second period when Pat Reilly, who was playing for Wolfe Pack, tripped Geoff Grek, but both were called for penalties, including Grek for ‘diving’ on the very play where he was tripped. The Squirrels couldn’t figure that call out but lost the chance at the power play.
The Squirrels held the lead throughout much of the third period, but almost immediately after a failed breakaway attempt by the Squirrels, Wolfe Pack scored, then again, and three more times after that as the Squirrels were gassed. One or two extra skaters may have made a difference.
