The Squirrels had a huge disadvantage in Saturday’s game, having only two regular defensemen suiting up, which didn’t make it easy as Hockey Donkeys figured it out in the second period en route to a 10-2 victory. The Squirrels kept it close, at 2-2, through the early part of the second period, however.

Jon Danziger and Neil Shah each scored for the Squirrels.

The Squirrels won Saturday, 5-3, but it comes with an asterisk – the Highlanders and Squirrels swapped goalies. The late-night Saturday game left the benches short and the Highlanders could only land a Silver-level goalie for a sub, which it illegal by league rules.The Squirrels had the choice to play or win by forfeit. Knowing with the short bench, a Silver level goalie would be a tough match, so the Highlanders then suggested swapping goalies. The Squirrels accepted, and escaped with a 5-3 win.

The Squirrels got off to a bad start in their first game back in Bronze 1 on Sunday, falling 10-6 to their old foe, Panic. The twist on this: Panic didn’t have a goalie. The Squirrels themselves had a short bench on the big rink, which didn’t help.

The Squirrels won a nail-biter Sunday, trading goals with the Wheaton Caps before prevailing, 5-4. Brent Machado got the scoring started in the first and Ben Sumner added another shortly after to give the Squirrels a 2-0 early lead. The Caps bounced back and tied it, only for Machado to score again with only 13 seconds left in the first period. The Caps scored the only goal in the second, then took a 4-3 lead early in the third. While killing a penalty, Neil Shah then tied the game while shorthanded. Jon Danziger then scored with a little more than five minutes remaining. There were plenty of penalties in the third, including some major cheap shots with less than a minute remaining. The Squirrels held on for the win.
