It was the best and worst of the Squirrels on Wednesday, as they scored nine goals, but gave up seven, in a back-and-forth win against the Thundercats.

After the Thundercats took a 6-5 lead in the third period, the Squirrels then scored three straight, gave up a late goal, but sealed the win with an empty-netter.

In a game where the Squirrels outshot Jailbreak 33-15, it took a shootout to decide the winner, as Jailbreak’s 2-0 third-period lead disappeared and the Squirrels survived.

With plenty of shots but little to show for it, the Squirrels finally struck on gritty goals from Rob Myers and Neil Shah in the third period, the second of which came on a much-needed power play. Jon Danziger scored the only goal in the shootout. The Squirrels improved to 2-0.

The Squirrels got the new season off on the right foot Wednesday, holding off the Wheaton Capitals, 6-3 in the newly-renovated Resor Rink (which now has the penalty box and scorekeeper on the same side of the benches).

After a scoreless first, the Squirrels exploded for four goals in the second period, then a fifth early in the third. The Wheaton Capitals scored three straight, including one on the power play, but it wasn’t enough. Amy Reich added a buzzer-beating empty netter for her second goal of the game. Vivek Pinto also scored twice, as did Ben Sumner and Geoff Kozen in his first game as a Squirrel.
