The Squirrels got off to a bad start in their first game back in Bronze 1 on Sunday, falling 10-6 to their old foe, Panic. The twist on this: Panic didn’t have a goalie. The Squirrels themselves had a short bench on the big rink, which didn’t help.

The Squirrels won a nail-biter Sunday, trading goals with the Wheaton Caps before prevailing, 5-4. Brent Machado got the scoring started in the first and Ben Sumner added another shortly after to give the Squirrels a 2-0 early lead. The Caps bounced back and tied it, only for Machado to score again with only 13 seconds left in the first period. The Caps scored the only goal in the second, then took a 4-3 lead early in the third. While killing a penalty, Neil Shah then tied the game while shorthanded. Jon Danziger then scored with a little more than five minutes remaining. There were plenty of penalties in the third, including some major cheap shots with less than a minute remaining. The Squirrels held on for the win.

The game was a lot closer than the final score Sunday, as the Squirrels scored the tying, then go-ahead goal down the stretch before adding two empty-netters for an 8-5 win against the Laughing Skulls.

The game didn’t get off to a great start, however, as the Squirrels gave up a quick 2-0 lead before marching back, only to surrender two more. The Squirrels cut the lead going into the second period, then tied it in the second. The Skulls took the lead with a short-handed goal early in the third but it was all Squirrels after that.

Jon Danziger had three goals and three assists, while linemate Amy Reich had two goals and two assists. Brent Machado also scored twice.

The Squirrels took over sole possession of first place Monday with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Bullets.

Vivek Pinto scored on his first shift of the game, but the Bullets scored twice and led 2-1 after the first period. The Squirrels had a much better second period, as Chi Pham and Brent Machado each scored to put the Squirrels back on top. With a power play going into the third, the Squirrels came out soft and gave up a shorthanded goal.

Then came the shootout, where Pinto and Amy Reich each scored to seal the victory.

Each goal and assist came from the same two players on the Bullets. Reich had two assists. Merritt Lyon played his first game in net this season for the Squirrels. Each team had a two-man advantage but neither scored.
