Squirrels 5, Barbarians 0

The Screaming Squirrels won their first game of the season Sunday with a 5-0 victory against the Barbarians at Tucker Road. Playing with a shortened roster, the Squirrels showed little rust despite a 16-day layoff. Goaltender Drew Thiemann earned the shutout behind a defense that only allowed 13 shots, the least since allowing five in an August match. Five different goal scorers led the offense while posting 30 shots. Winger Juan Canchasto scored a goal and had two assists while dominating the corners down low, setting up teammates seemingly at will through the Barbarians defense. Defenseman Don Marks tacked on three assists from the blue line.

The game was halted twice in the second period as two Barbarians, including the goaltender, shook off injuries. Ben Sumner, Jared Genser, Greg Wenograd, and Wade Marks also scored for the Squirrels, who will next face the Homerhawks on Sunday in Rockville.

Squirrels 5, Vikings 5

The Screaming Squirrels opened our first full season of Hockey North America play by skating to a 5-5 tie with the Vikings. The scoring was back and forth with the Vikings taking a lead with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. With just over a minute to go, the Squirrels took their time out, and with less than a minute remaining pulled the goalie. With only 17 ticks left on the clock, Adam Hughes took a shot off the pass from Don Marks and the rebound caromed up into the air. Greg Wenograd and Juan Canchasto were waiting in front of the crease as the puck came down, and Juan was able to put it in the back of the net. The Screaming Squirrels then skated a 5 minute, running clock, overtime with the Vikings and tied their first game while wearing the new road jerseys.

Summer Ice Season Ends, Fall Season to Begin Soon

After starting the season 6-0, the Screaming Squirrels Ice team was moved up to the C division in the summer season of HNA. Including last night’s defeat to the Homerhawks, the Squirrels finished the season with three consecutive losses and find themselves on the outside looking in for the playoffs.

While disappointed in the results of the summer, we can now turn our attention towards the fall season, and look forward to being competitive in our new division. The season will begin towards the end of October, with a schedule to be released shortly. Our jerseys should also be in this week, so look back soon for photos of our new road uniforms.

Playoffs: The Rocks 4, Squirrels 3

The Screaming Squirrels failed to defend their C Level Roller Championship, in falling to The Rocks on 8/31. The Squirrels entered the playoffs as the 4th seed, and eliminated the 5th seeded Chupacabras 7-2. Next we faced The Rocks who had soundly defeated us just two weeks prior by the score of 5-0. We came out strong and at halftime led the game 2-0. Unfortunately they put together a string of three goals within just a few minutes, and ended up with the win, 4-3. The Rocks then proceeded to the Championship where they defeated the 3rd seeded 5 Holes, 8-1.

Congratulations to The Rocks for the Championship and to the Roller Squirrels for another winning season. We finished with a record of 13-8-1. Currently the Ice Squirrels are battling for playoff positioning in the HNA Summer League. Fall Ice Hockey will begin towards the end of October.
