Roller: Squirrels 6, Whale 5

The new-look Squirrels caught a break Thursday, as the Whale’s rusty first period was worse than the Squirrels’ second period lackluster performance.

Up 4-0, the Squirrels finally surrendered a goal late in the first period. The Squirrels even went up 5-1, then 6-2 in the second, before Whale scored three straight. The Squirrels survived, however, killing off the final minutes like a penalty kill.

All three new players, Matt Ekinci, Kevin Schneider, and Dave Parks figured into the scoring.

Squirrels Championship T-Shirts and Pucks

These days, teams that win championships in the Gardens Ice House adult hockey league receive T-shirts. The last three the Screaming Squirrels got are almost exactly the same, other than the colors. We got green in the summer of 2014, red for winter 2013-14, and beige for 2012-13. The yellow one was for roller in 2011 and has the year on it. The best one we got was for our 2005 roller championship, which has Screaming Squirrels on it.

We also got a couple of championship pucks. One was for our 2005-6 championship, and the other was for our 2009-10 championship, below (I lost my other one in the condo fire).

We once got a trophy, for our 2004 ice championship, but that was with Hockey North America. We didn’t get anything for our 2003 co-championship.

When the Squirrels Were the Devils

In late 2001 and 2002, the Screaming Squirrels hadn’t picked that name yet,  instead calling themselves the Devils. This was because we had several teammates from New Jersey. These were are first team jerseys, which we wore in the Rockville roller/ball hockey league and also in Laurel in 2002.
