Squirrels 5, Silver Spring 3

A misplayed puck by the goaltender off of a face-off is a tough way to lose for anyone, and it happened to Silver Spring Thursday after holding the Squirrels to a 3-3 tie throughout most of the game.

The Squirrels took an early 2-0 lead, then fizzled. Even a four-minute power play turned into a problem as Silver Spring scored shorthanded, briefly taking the lead, before Don Marks tied the game with seconds dwindling with the man advantage.

The second period took a turn for the worse as the Squirrels took three penalties, including one overlapping, giving them little momentum. It wasn’t until late in the game when Rob Myers hit the puck on a face-off toward the net, and the sub goaltender, who hadn’t played in net in several years, let it in. The Squirrels added an empty net goal.

The best part? It puts the Squirrels in a tie for first place with the Jesters.

Squirrels 3, Wolfe Pack 1

There was a minute on Sunday when the Squirrels played shorthanded on the ice and not because of a penalty, but because they didn’t have enough players on the bench. They gave up their only goal then, but it didn’t matter as Tony Richelsen scored twice to clinch a 3-1 victory against Wolfe Pack.

The win kept the Squirrels in a tie for first place with the Piranhas.

Roller: Squirrels Get Solid Win vs. Jesters

The Squirrels faced the first-place Jesters Wednesday for the second time this season, but this time exploding for six second-half goals in a what turned into a 7-1 route. This was despite a stellar game in net from former Squirrel Ed Owen, who made many spectacular saves for the Jesters before the Squirrels opened the floodgates. It took nearly 14 minutes for the Squirrels to score, as Brian Iciek found the net on a power play. The Jesters tied the game up on a power play early in the second half before Jeff Ford scored on a breakaway four minutes later. The Squirrels scored five more goals in the final eight minutes. Bob Sewell played in net for the Squirrels.

Squirrels Win Two Games at Once

With several players on vacation, both benches were already short Tuesday when both the ice and roller teams had games at the same time. The ice team won, 4-1 against Pucks Deep behind a hattrick from Tony Richelsen, while the Real C Team took the Squirrels to a shootout, which the Squirrels won in five rounds. Don Marks played the first period of the ice game before switching over to roller, while Mark Tessar played the ice game before arriving in roller in time for a shootout attempt.
