Squirrels Knocked Out in First Round

It’s been about a year since the ice Squirrels lost a playoff game, but it happened Sunday in the first round against the Mastodons in a 7-4 game that could’ve easily been closer.

Charles Warner had three goals for the Squirrels, while Brent Machado assisted on all four, but the Mastadons pulled away in the third period.

The Squirrels will regroup for the summer season in a couple of weeks.

In a meaningless game for the Squirrels on Tuesday, they faltered, losing 5-3 to the lowly Panic, who gave themselves a shot at staying in 7th place in the standings. The Squirrels would have remained in 5th place either way, and will face either the Mastodons or the Highlanders in the first round of the playoffs. That game will be Sunday, April 12, at 9:40 p.m.

Home Visions 4, Squirrels 3 (SO)

Badly outplayed, the Squirrels still came only inches from winning Friday, as they fell to the lowly Home Visions, who celebrated as if they won the championship.

Tied 2-2, Mark Tessar scored on a slap shot in his final game with the Squirrels to give them the lead down the stretch. A late penalty gave Home Visions a power play, plus an extra skater with an empty net. The Squirrels nearly got it in, missing by inches, but Home visions tied the game with 30 seconds remaining, then scored once on the shootout for the win.

The Squirrels have fifth place locked up, but have one game remaining on Tuesday against Panic.

After losing to Howard County Heat 11-2 back in December, the Squirrels knew they’d have their work cut out for them Sunday while only playing with eight skaters. But something was different. The Squirrels, who were down to one sub after Neil Shah skated away with an injury in the third period, exploded for four goals in the second period, and HCH couldn’t keep up in a 6-2 win.

Brent Machado and Charles Warner each scored a pair for the Squirrels, while Tero Moberg and Shah had the other. Merritt Lyon made 38 saves.
