Former Foes Join Squirrels Roller Team

Longtime members of the Squirrels roller team remember the Hurricanes. In 2003, the Squirrels faced them in a best-of-3 championship match, split 1-1, but couldn’t play game three because Hurricane Isabel tore through the area. In 2005, the Hurricanes were a dominant team, but lost in the semifinals which paved the way for a Squirrels championship. After that, the Hurricanes were promoted to the B division, and the Squirrels haven’t seen them since.

The Hurricanes were set to drop back down to the C division this season, but after several members couldn’t return, they had to break up. Which left Eddie Owen, Steve Heger Jr. and Nathan Leber needing a new team. So they’ll be putting on the yellow jerseys and skating alongside their former foes.

Here is the 2011 Squirrels roller roster:

  • Ben Sumner
  • Jeff Ford
  • Stu Miller (goalie)
  • Juan Canchasto
  • Chi Pham
  • Mark Tessar
  • Steve Heger
  • Don Marks
  • Rob Myers
  • Brian Iciek
  • Eric Smith
  • Nathan Leber
  • Ed Owen
  • Wes Gassert
  • Bob Sewell (backup goaltender)

Playoffs: Piranhas 4, Squirrels 2

Jason Nehmer, left, celebrates his first goal with Mark Tessar.

The Piranhas sort of got their revenge after several losses against the Squirrels by bouncing them from the playoffs Thursday, 4-2. The Squirrels had beaten them twice this season, and 8-0 in last winter’s finals.

The Squirrels dressed a full bench but the league’s leading scorer, John Kucharski (who had 14 more points than the second league leader), notched two goals, including the winner in the third. In his final game before moving to Kentucky, Jason Nehmer (No. 88, pictured) scored twice.

The Piranhas, the third seed, advance to the finals for the second winter in a row, where they will face the No. 1 seed, the Highlanders, who beat DC Fire in overtime.

The Squirrels will be back on the ice soon as they’re fielding another summer team.

Roller Team Adds Three Players

The Screaming Squirrels inline team will have several familiar faces returning, but also some new ones. Wes Gassert, brother of former Squirrel ice and roller goon Kyle, will be joining the squad, as will Brian Iciek and Eric Smith, all of whom come from our Rockville connections.

Returning are the regulars Ben Sumner, Don Marks, Juan Canchasto, Jeff Ford, Mark Tessar, Chi Pham, Rob Myers, and Stu Miller in net.

The Bronze league won’t be easy though, as familiar teams return, including the Hurricanes, who haven’t played at this level for five years. Also returning are The 5 Holes, the Real C Team, Whale, Team Mylec, Silver Spring, High Rollers, and District 5, with the Jesters joining the league.

Games begin April 25.

Squirrels End Regular Season With Win

Oddly enough, Sunday’s 3-1 victory for the Squirrels won’t earn them extra standings points, since a scheduling abnormality got them an extra game in the regular season. Instead, the win kept them from losing two points. While the first-round playoff opponent isn’t set until after the Piranhas-Nordiques game, the Squirrels stepped up their efforts in preparation for the playoffs, which begin next week.

After a scoreless first period, goaltender Eric Coulson let in his only goal of the game early in the second. But the Squirrels’ took advantage of quality blueline shots as Don Marks and Chi Pham each tallied, with Pham’s marker coming on a power play.

After lots of hard work in keeping it 2-1, the Squirrels added an insurance marker on another power play as Paul Kobernick netted a rebound. Brent Machado earned assists on all three goals, and led the Squirrels in scoring with 13 goals and 9 assists for the season.

The Squirrels finished 12-8-1 on the season (with one win not counting) as they head into the playoffs, set to defend their Bronze 2 winter championship.

Laughing Skulls 5, Squirrels 2

Generating offense has been the main struggle of the Squirrels all season, but they’ve always found an exception when playing against the lowly Laughing Skulls. But a relative lack of effort led to the Squirrels giving up a season-high five goals – two more than in any previous game – in a 5-2 loss. The Squirrels also squandered several power plays, including two-man advantages, though they did outshoot the Skulls, 29-15.
