Squirrels 11, Whale 2

It might be hard to believe, but the Screaming Squirrels roller team hadn’t finished the season in first place since 2003. Though they have three championships despite that, it wasn’t until Wednesday 11-2 victory did they lock up the top spot with 22 points in 14 games. The second place Jesters also finished with 22 points but the Squirrels won the tie breaker.

Next up is the playoffs, where they’ll face the Real C Team – one of the teams that beat the Squirrels before their 9-game winning streak.

The Squirrels held a two goal lead in the first period Friday before giving up three goals early in the second. Then four straight goals by the Squirrels, including an empty netter, sealed the game against the Laughing Skulls, 6-3.

With a full bench, the Squirrels played their old nemesis the 5 Holes on Wednesday, scoring three unanswered goals in the first half, then another four unanswered in the second for a 7-3 win. One game remains in the season before the playoffs.

Squirrels 5, Silver Spring 3

A misplayed puck by the goaltender off of a face-off is a tough way to lose for anyone, and it happened to Silver Spring Thursday after holding the Squirrels to a 3-3 tie throughout most of the game.

The Squirrels took an early 2-0 lead, then fizzled. Even a four-minute power play turned into a problem as Silver Spring scored shorthanded, briefly taking the lead, before Don Marks tied the game with seconds dwindling with the man advantage.

The second period took a turn for the worse as the Squirrels took three penalties, including one overlapping, giving them little momentum. It wasn’t until late in the game when Rob Myers hit the puck on a face-off toward the net, and the sub goaltender, who hadn’t played in net in several years, let it in. The Squirrels added an empty net goal.

The best part? It puts the Squirrels in a tie for first place with the Jesters.
