Squirrels 4, Whale 3

With a 3-0 lead in the second period, the Squirrels killed off a 2-minute 4-on-2, but then surrendered three goals in 1 minute and 11 seconds to a short-benched Whale team. The Squirrels, however, won the game in the shootout with goals from Mark Tessar and Eric Smith. Jeff Ford scored twice for the Squirrels while Don Marks had the other. Tessar had three assists. This marked the first time in two years that the Squirrels beat the Whale.

Ice: Squirrels Down Heineken Light

The Squirrels only had an modest 2-0 lead in the first period Sunday when Tony Richelsen took the puck coast-to-coast, scoring shorthanded at the buzzer in the most well-timed shot of the season. Only Richelsen had no idea how much time was remaining – he just shot it and it went in. But it stood as the game winner as the Squirrels skated away with an 8-2 victory behind Dave Steckel’s hattrick, including a wrap-around shot. Richelsen added a second shorthanded goal. Tom Fischer and Bob Valdes also scored for the Squirrels.

Ice: Cruisers 4, Squirrels 3

The Squirrels had a comfortable 3-1 lead Sunday, but a couple of turnovers and a few too many penalties didn’t help down the stretch as the Cruisers came back to win, 4-3.

Silver Spring 3, Squirrels 1

The Squirrels only lost three games all last season. This year, they’ve already lost three after Thursday’s 3-1 loss to Silver Spring. Luck played a factor as the Squirrels kept hitting posts, and having only two subs didn’t help, either.
