The Squirrels played the Bullets for the first time in more than a year Thursday, putting up with extremely bad ice conditions before holding on for a 4-2 win.
The ice conditions were so bad, in fact, that the previous game had been cancelled after extremely warm weather caused excessive divots in the ice from figure skaters digging in. The attempt to clean them up later caused excessive water to sit on top of the ice, making the puck virtually unmovable in certain spots. But top-notch squeegeeing by ref Jeff Baker fixed everything, and the game proceeded.
Vivek Pinto and Scott Kronzek scored the first two goals of the game, giving the Squirrels a 2-0 lead after the first. The Bullets got one back before Brent Machado gave the Squirrels a 3-1 lead going into the third.
Former Squirrel Terry Young scored for the Bullets but that’s as close as they could get. Paul Luethy scored an empty netter from behind the Squirrels’ blue line for the 4-2 win.
